Chasing Dreams

I was fortunate enough as a child to have parents who encourage me to do whatever I wanted to do. Within reason, of course. My father had an incredibly strong work ethic, so much so, that I saw him much less than I wanted. My mother had a strong work ethic as well, and persevered through a good bit of personal turmoil, overcame it, and moved on through a solid professional career. Me, every time I said I wanted to be something? My parents said I could do it. Astronaut, sure. Police Officer, absolutely. Marine Biologist, uh huh. And so on, and so forth. There wasn’t anything they didn’t support me doing.

That being said, here I am, nearly thirty years old, and I work in the service industry as a Director of Operation. Well, that’s my secret identity anyway. Inside I’m a writer, dreamer, and all-around creative type. That side just doesn’t pay the bills… yet.

I, myself, have two children at this point. One is old enough for me to be able to support his dreams the way mine were supported. He wants to be something, I tell him he can do it… again, within reason. The other, younger one, talks in babbles and coos, so convincing him of anything other than chilling out when the bottle comes, is out of the question.

I guess the point is this: too many people don’t chase their dreams. I even support my friends and their goals. But in any case, you have to do it smart. You have to take care of yourself… pay your adult bills, live your adult life, but you can do that and support your dreams, too. Don’t get me wrong, if your dream is to be a teacher, kudos to you. Get your education and chase that! Teachers are what helped me realize my dreams and push me on to want to be a writer. If you want to be a _____________ fill in the blank, you can. And you should. You should find a way.

Get up, go to your job, but don’t let your dreams just be dreams. I think Shia said that, too, and look at him.

Just kidding. But seriously, chase your dreams.
