Have you ever seen an accident and been unable to look away?
The answer is yes, yes you have.
I say that because everyone in the world can find a distraction at any given time. I think for a lot of people, that is reality tv. Television is general provides a sort of… blase distraction. I’m not a fan of television, but I am movies. Digressing: One of the biggest aides in a self-published, or indie, author’s arsenal is social media. On the flip side of that, it can also be the biggest hindrance. You’re typing and working right along, flying through your progress. One-hundred words. Two-hundred words. DING! Facebook notification.
“Wonder who that is?”
On you go, checking your phone, your tablet, or the tab in Google Chrome. “Oh, that’s such and such.” You answer, take some time to share in a laugh, or a memory, and then you make the fatal mistake. Beyond contacting your dearly beloved friend, you’ve spotted one of the most toxic and distracting things on the internet… a cat video.
The cat sets up for the jump… shakes his butt, and falls off the roof. Three hours later and you’re crawling out of the rabbit hole of atrocities like Nyan Cat, Lightsaber Kid, Fail Videos, and other meme-ish things.
Just to point out the obvious. If you’re opening your Facebook, or your Twitter, and you allow yourself to be tempted by that notification… Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.
